Travel for Tourism or to Visit Family and Friends
Visitor Visa
Prolong your Stay
in Canada
up to
Ten Years
If you’re a citizen of a non-visa-exempt country, you must apply for a visitor visa to enter Canada for tourism, vacations, or visiting family and friends.
The Canadian visitor visa can be valid for up to 10 years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During each visit, you can stay in Canada for a maximum of 6 months.
Even if you’re planning to stay for less than 6 months, it’s important to apply for a visitor visa ahead of your travel to avoid entry issues. Nationals of visa-exempt countries may only need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), but most visitors from non-exempt countries must have a valid visa in their passport.
Whether you’re exploring Canada’s vibrant cities or spending time with loved ones, a visitor visa ensures your stay is legal and seamless.

Required Documents
Your passport must be current and valid for the duration of your stay. It’s recommended to have at least 6 months of validity left on your passport from your planned entry date.
You must show that you have enough financial resources to cover your stay in Canada. This can include bank statements, pay stubs, or other financial documents that demonstrate your ability to support yourself without working during your visit.
If you’re working or studying in your home country, provide proof of employment or enrollment. This assures Canadian authorities that you have strong ties to your home country and are likely to return after your visit.
If you’re visiting family or friends, you may need to provide a letter of invitation from them. This should include details about their status in Canada (such as proof of citizenship or permanent residency), their relationship to you, and the purpose of your visit. Supporting documents, like their utility bills or pay slips, might be required to demonstrate their ability to host you.
